Sutcliffe Clockwork Tinplate Toy Boat - Commodore

Sutcliffe Clockwork Tinplate Toy Boat - Commodore

This lovely vintage Sutcliffe Commodore clockwork cruiser toy boat is in fabulous condition, it's bright, colourful and virtually as new despite it being at least 30 years old. These wonderful models were the epitome of a traditional seaside holiday, for many kids years ago, and nowadays evoke a sense of childhood nostalgia.

These lovely old tinplate boats are becoming increasingly difficult to find in this stunning original condition, the paintwork is bright and shiny with only very slight rubbing in a couple of places and, based on others we've had, this is likely to have happened before it even left the factory.

The model comes complete with it's original box which is clean and bright with only minor creasing and a minor tear where one end flap joins.

In summary - I'm confident that this model has never been used, the little flag, that so often gets lost, is still in the small white paper bag together with the original windscreen, little metal mast and, all important, clockwork key. The Sutcliffe and Commodore decals are unmarked and, having wound-up the motor, it is strong and runs beautifully.

For those interested in the history - these boats were produced by Sutcliffe Pressings Ltd of Horsforth, Leeds, England who first began with the manufacture of domestic utensils back in 1885. It wasn't until after the first world war that the company started making "toy boats" and Commodore, in production from 1977 until 1981, was one of the very last models ever produced before the sad demise of the company in the early 80's.
